Pace University will open all three campuses for in-person, online, and hybrid classes for the fall semester, with classes beginning on the New York City, Pleasantville, and the Elisabeth Haub School of Law campuses on Monday, August 24, 2020. The Law School flex program will begin on Saturday, August 22, 2020. These plans are in line with the phased reopening guidance for higher education issued by New York State.
We know that the past months have been challenging for everyone, in many different ways. We’ve all acclimated to remote learning and remote work. Some of us have experienced illness or even loss, or economic hardship. As much as we’ve come together as a Pace Community to meet these challenges—and we’ve all done so with admirable flexibility, resilience, and success—we’ve also missed being together in person. We do our best work when we come together as One Pace, and we’re excited we’ll have the opportunity to see you on campus again soon.
At the same time, we know that the new semester will be unlike anything that has come before. Our COVID-19 Task Force spent the past three months considering options for safely returning to campus this fall, as did countless others in all our academic and operational units. This final plan was reviewed by the Fall Reopening Community Group, representing all communities on all three campuses, and then endorsed by our Board of Trustees. It will soon be submitted to New York State. All our plans are compliant with state guidelines on reopening higher education, and they have been informed by recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities in New York, the American College Health Association, and other peer and professional groups. We will adjust them as needed, if circumstances require. We are determined to provide our students with the high-quality educational experience they expect while protecting health and safety for everyone in our community, including students, faculty, and staff.
Most important, we will institute strict social distancing and density reduction measures across all three campuses. We will require all members of our community, including approved visitors, to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms, and we will enforce isolation and contact-tracing for any positive cases. We will offer classes in-person, online, and in hybrid formats, to allow flexibility for remote learning when needed, including the possibility of a fully online semester for those who require it. And we will schedule socially distanced move-ins to residence halls.
