Help Be the Match
For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. Take the first step to being someone's cure. Become a marrow donor today! Register with Be the Match and they will send a swab kit directly to your home.
Last month, Coach Andy Rondeau and his Pace University football players showed leadership and commitment to service by partnering with Be The Match to spread awareness about blood cancers, the US Marrow Donor Program, and why it is so important for people to sign up. Our student-athletes registered with Be The Match as potential marrow donors. Their odds are low of ever matching with a patient in need and getting called to donate, but if they did get called, they would have the opportunity to save a life.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis forced the cancellation of a planned campus recruitment and outreach event. Coach Rondeau and Be The Match expected to recruit at least 100 new potential marrow donors at that event. Along with the loss of those registrations, Be The Match has cancelled all upcoming live donor recruitment events.
This is bad news for patients currently fighting blood illnesses who have not found their match for a lifesaving transplant. That's why Be The Match has asked for help from the Pace Community. Please consider signing up online for Be The Match. It only takes about 10 minutes, and then you get a swab kit sent to your home. For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. Over the past 30 years Be The Match ® , operated by the National Marrow Donor Program ® (NMDP), has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world.
Be The Match is also looking for students and other community members to volunteer as digital ambassadors! If you are interested in communications and marketing, you have the potential to make a big impact for families fighting blood illnesses from the safety of your own home.
Staff and faculty organizations also important to supporting Be The Match. If you are part of an organization and are willing to help, please reach out to Andres Lopez via email. We thank you for taking part in this important initiative!
This fall, join the LBGTQA+ Centers on both campuses for workshops intended to better inform and educate individuals as to different LGBTQA+ identities, best allyship practices, and more. All are welcome!
