Make Spring Break Meaningful
This March, join your fellow Setters and CCAR in the Rockaways for an impactful and incredibly rewarding Alternative Spring Break experience!
Spring break is generally known for its balmy destinations. But there’s a more inspiring and encouraging way to do spring break—one that involves students coming together for the greater good, to positively impact communities and truly make a difference.
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is the name, and high-impact community service is the game. This year, join the ongoing effort to rebuild and restore homes in the Rockaways, an area of New York that was severely impacted by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. This most certainly, is a spring break that’ll change you for the better.
Want to get involved? To apply, and to learn more about ASB, you must attend one of the following information sessions:
Thursday, February 4, 3:25–4:25 p.m. or
Wednesday, February 10, 12:10 p.m.–1:10 p.m.
Miller 16 (PLV) and E319 (NYC)
Last year, the Alternative Spring Break initiative was considered a surefire success. Here’s what students had to say:
“During the process, it didn’t seem like there were a lot of visible changes, but the pictures proved otherwise. The house looks so much better. We sanded, mudded, primed, painted, and drywalled these walls. We looked around the rooms with pride. There were also so many things I learned during the trip, from all the tools that we used to the history of the Rockaways.”—Krystle Solano
“This week has definitely been a life-changing experience! Today was sad because we had to leave the Rockaways, but what makes me happy is that everyone was satisfied with their work and most are excited to return to the Rockaways in the near future.”—Ashleen Ulysse
“The greatest part of my day was when the man whose house we were working on came in. He had just received electricity back after two years! He was so happy and I could not help but smile. He truly made my day better, and I certainly hope, by us lending a hand, he felt better tonight.”—Michael Tropeano
