Nothing to Mock
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Pace Mock Trial/Law Society made the case with an impressive performance at the American Mock Trial Association regional competitions.
When the Pace Mock Trial/Law Society reached out to us to share the news about their performance at the American Mock Trial Association regional competition at the University of Delaware, we had no objections. The team was, without a shadow of a doubt, guilty of performing extremely well against top teams from Princeton University, Seton Hall, Swarthmore, Fordham, and the University of Maryland on February 15 and 16.
Pace Mock Trial/Law Society President Bridget Winkler ’15, along with teammates Brendon Batterson ’15 and Michelle Cooper ’17, made up a defense team that won an entire trial. One of their witnesses, Jessie Huffman ’17, was recognized by the competition with an award for Outstanding Witness Performance.
“Nearly every attorney was ranked during their trial and every single witness was ranked at least once. We are extremely pleased with our performance this year and were proud to represent Pace University in the American Mock Trial Association regional competitions,” says Winkler. “We are coached by two dedicated individuals: Lubin Professor James Castagna and Pace University alumnus Conrad Cantor. Without them, our accomplishments this year would not have been possible.”
Pace senior Adrian Morris ’14, who has been on the Mock Trial team for three years, is proud of his accomplishments during his final year.
"Being a member of this team has done wonders for my confidence in my ability to articulate. During my time on the Mock Trial team, I have competed against the best schools in the country: Princeton, NYU, and Swarthmore are a few which come to mind. I'll never forget the invaluable experiences I have had with Mock Trial and I'm honestly sad that it's over. For those who are interested, I recommend the Mock Trial seminar class with Professor Castagna, because it greatly supplemented my preparation for this year's competition."
First-year student Ashley Unangst ’17 is just getting started and couldn’t be more proud.
"Saying that joining the Pace Mock Trial team was the best decision I've made since I started here at Pace would be an understatement. Not only did it really mark the beginning of my journey to law school and the experience of writing direct and cross examinations itself was priceless, but also because the team is a group of such amazing people,” says Unangst. “I do feel as though the experience put me a step ahead of other aspiring attorneys who have never dealt with the work that actually needs to be put into a court trial, and I highly recommend the Pace Mock Trial team to anyone who is interested. Even if law is not part of your future career goals, it is still a great organization to be a part of.”
