Pace Athletics Receives Major Gift
A $1 million gift from B.J Finnerty will enable the establishment of the Athletics Fund, as well as support an endowed scholarship in honor of the late Peter X. Finnerty.
Last month, Pace Athletics received a $1 million gift from B.J. Finnerty, the wife of the late Peter X. Finnerty, founder of the Athletics and Recreation Department at Pace and an invaluable leader of the athletics community here.
"I am thrilled to be able to announce such an impactful gift to support Pace student-athletes and our community," said Director of Athletics Mark Brown. "Private support is integral to the continued success of Pace Athletics, and we thank Mrs. Finnerty for her incredible generosity."
Peter X. Finnerty was Director of Athletics, Director of Alumni Relations, athlete, professor, coach, and inductee of the Pace University Hall of Fame. He established the Athletics and Recreation Program at Pace University in 1947. Finnerty served the University and its students for more than 40 years. He was the Director of Athletics from 1947–1988 as well as the men's basketball coach from 1948–1960 and the baseball coach from 1948–1964.
A portion of Ms. Finnerty’s generous gift will kickstart the Athletics Fund, which will enable ongoing care, maintenance, and improvement of Peter X. Finnerty Field—currently the home of Pace’s baseball and field hockey teams, as well as the setting for many intramural sports activities. Another portion of the gift will enhance an existing endowed scholarship fund, money that will be awarded to Pace student-athletes who demonstrate financial need and meet certain academic requirements.
"Peter X. Finnerty personified the values of discipline and hard work and, in keeping with the University motto Opportunitas, he was committed to helping students realize their potential," said Brown. "To be able to honor his legacy in this way reminds us of the proud history and traditions that he established, which laid the foundation for today's students and future Setters who will benefit for many years to come."
