Welcome Back from President Krislov
President Krislov welcomes the Pace Community back for the spring 2018 semester and shares his thoughts on a brighter 2018, big wins in academics and athletics, and his super-cool Cafeteria Karaoke event.
I hope everyone in the Pace Community had a restful and relaxing winter break and that you’ve returned to campus for spring 2018 feeling re-energized and ready to roll. During the break, I spent some time with my family in Colombia and Panama, and then traveled to sunny Florida and California, where I was able to meet with some of our alumni who live in the area and also see Pace Performing Arts commercial dance and acting students in action during their three-week LA Intensive.
At Pace, we ended 2017 on a particularly high note, with our outstanding students winning the National College Federal Reserve Challenge for the third time in four years and our NYC and Pleasantville Model UN Teams taking home 15 awards for their poised representation of global policymaking at the 2017 National Model UN Conference in DC and the Southern Regional Model UN Conference in Atlanta. It’s not just our academic teams that are earning kudos. Our women’s field hockey team, in only its third season, was ranked #10 in the country among all NCAA Division II programs and this month, the men's lacrosse team has been ranked #5 in the Nike/U.S Lacrosse Division II Preseason Top 20. On top of that, our teams averaged a 3.27 GPA with 10 programs above a 3.4, an amazing feat considering the time and dedication they devote to their team.
The esteemed Pace faculty have also been making strides of their own. The Office of Research reports that FY17 closed with Pace faculty having been granted more than $9.3 million to fund their research. FY18 is off to a great start with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the US Department of Education—just to name a few—funding research into projects like voltage-gated calcium channel modulation, predictive models for osteoarthritis disease, and data analytics in cybersecurity. I invite you to learn more about all of the other research and funding opportunities available to faculty by visiting the Office of Research.
On a musical note, casting representatives from NBC’s The Voice, will be coming to Pace’s NYC Campus to hold private auditions exclusively for Pace students on Monday, January 29. This is a fantastic opportunity and I strongly encourage anyone interested to audition. If you’re a fan of The Voice, then perhaps you’ve heard of season 13 cast member Kathrina Feigh, but did you know that she’s also a recent Pace alumna? Kathrina graduated in 2016 with a BFA in Musical Theater. Since her time on The Voice, she’s been back in New York working on new music and auditioning for musical theater shows.
If you aren’t ready to audition, that’s okay, too. Also on January 29, I’ll be hosting Cafeteria Karaoke with a special guest DJ. Grab a friend (isn’t it easier to do scary things when you bring a buddy?) and come on down to Café 101 where I, too, will be hitting the maybe-not-so high notes. Think you want to do a duet with me? Check out my top 15 favorite karaoke songs on Spotify.
As we begin this new year, I look forward to the opportunities ahead, as well as the challenges we must overcome. In light of recent national discourse on immigration and racism, it’s important that we move forward together as a tight-knit and supportive community—a University that serves and supports ALL students. In the words of the great Martin Luther King Jr., “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” I hope you will join me in the coming weeks in celebrating Dr. King’s words as we host our annual MLK events in Pleasantville and New York City. On February 9, Yusef Salaam, one of the Central Park Five, will come to our PLV Campus to discuss race, class, the failings of our criminal justice system, legal protections for vulnerable juveniles, and basic human rights. Then, on February 27, award-winning journalist and social justice activist Marc Lamont Hill, PhD, will speak to our community in NYC. Learn more about these events happening on campus.
So far, it seems like we’re off to a great start to 2018. Until next time, I wish you all a happy and healthy semester.
P.S.—Need a feel-good moment today? Check out all of these prospective Pace students receiving and celebrating their acceptances via #PaceBound. Hopefully, most of them will be attending PaceBound events starting this spring.
