"News12" featured Dean Hill and Seidenberg's Cybersecurity Conference in "Pace University's Cybersecurity Day features K-9 demo"

A cybersecurity conference at Pace University focusing on the health care industry included a demonstration from a special K-9 guest.

Harley, a 4-year-old yellow Lab, is an electronics storage detection K-9 with the Westchester County Police Department. She's done some serious digging: sniffing out technology in the homes of alleged terrorists and cyber hackers, even the former attorney to President Donald Trump and now convicted felon, Michael Cohen.

"She can find anything with electronic memory," says Brett Hochron with Westchester County police.

Hochron says a K-9 like Harley can find these devices no matter how small they are, and much quicker than humans can.

"Cyber criminals have become incredibly sophisticated in their phishing ability," said Jonathan Hill, dean of Seidenberg School of CSIS at Pace University.

Press Release: High School Teachers train to prepare the next generation in Cybersecurity at Pace University

Seidenberg School receives NSA/NSF grant to conduct training

Teachers from 11 states including districts in Westchester converged at Pace University in Pleasantville last week to learn how to detect cybersecurity threats.

The week-long workshop held from July 12-20 was conducted by Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems. It was part of the GenCyber program, funded by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation to promote careers in cybersecurity.

The 24 teachers who participated in the program learned about how to include cybersecurity in their classroom curriculums. They will bring what they learned back to their respective schools and students in an effort to train students for future careers in cybersecurity. Locally, teachers from Riverside, Putnam Valley, Woodlands and Yorktown High Schools attended.

Andreea Cotoranu, Assistant Dean for Academic Innovation in the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information System and director of the Pace GenCyber program, said teachers learned to use Raspberry Pi, a hand-held computing device used to teach computing concepts, such as encryption and web security in the classroom. They were also introduced to fundamental cybersecurity principles through a series of fun learning activities that they can adopt for their classrooms.

Cybersecurity is a growing field with incidents of hacking and cybercrimes becoming a top global concern.

Pace will be holding a week-long cybersecurity camp for high school students July 31 - August 3.
