Press Release: James Sterngold Joins Pace University as Vice President for University Relations

Sterngold, an award-winning journalist and communications professional, joins Pace University from CUNY

James Sterngold has been appointed Vice President for University Relations at Pace University, effective July 9, 2018. In this role he will oversee communications, media, marketing, special events, communications and government affairs and community relations for Pace.

Sterngold comes to Pace from The City University of New York, where he served as senior advisor to the chancellor for communications and, most recently, interim director of communications and marketing. In those roles, he has overseen media strategy, crisis communications, internal communications, advertising and marketing and social media for the university system, in addition to writing speeches and other communications for the chancellor. He was lead writer on CUNY's new strategic framework, “Connected CUNY.”

“Jim is a gifted communicator, a strategic marketer and someone who’s given a lot of deep thought to issues confronting higher education,” said Marvin Krislov, president of Pace. “I’m excited for him to help us tell our story of opportunity and maximize its impact.”

“I’m excited to help advance Pace’s important mission, preparing its wonderfully diverse students for outstanding careers, and in the process educating New York’s next generation of leaders and innovators. Our students come from all walks of life, but what unites them is their drive and talent.  Pace provides the opportunities that transform lives,” added Jim Sterngold. “I’m looking forward to working with a talented team of professionals at Pace, getting to know our students and faculty and telling our story.”

Prior to joining CUNY, Sterngold was an award-winning business reporter, foreign correspondent and investigative journalist at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other publications. He has written for The New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Bloomberg Businessweek, SmartMoney and Mother Jones.

Sterngold spent 18 years at The New York Times as a domestic correspondent in New York and Los Angeles, and as a foreign correspondent in Japan. He is an eight-time winner of the Times' Publisher's Award, given to reporters who produce the most powerful articles in the newspaper. He was a member of the team cited by the Pulitzer board in awarding the 2002 Public Service prize to the Times staff for its 9/11 coverage.

He is the author of two books, including On the Cancer Frontier: One Man, One Disease, and a Medical Revolution, and an investigation into the collapse of E.F. Hutton, Burning Down the House.
