NY1 featured Dyson Professor Darrin Porcher in "Former NYPD Lieutenant Weighs in on Police Reform Legislation"

On Tuesday, local and federal leaders announced new police reform measures: President Donald Trump signed an executive order encouraging police departments to undergo de-escalation training, Governor Cuomo signed legislation requiring state police officers to wear body cameras while on patrol, and Mayor de Blasio announced the NYPD must turn over all body camera footage within 30 days of a serious incident.

Just days earlier, the NYPD's 600-member plainclothes anti-crime unit was disbanded. This comes amid global protests against police brutality and growing calls for criminal justice reform.

Pace University professor and former NYPD Lieutenant Dr. Darrin Porcher shared his take on the matter.

NY1 News featured Dyson Professor Dr. Darrin Porcher in "NY 1 News All Evening"

Joining us now via skype is Dr. Darrin Porcher. He's a retired NYPD lieutenant and criminal justice professor at Pace University. Dr. Porcher thanks for joining us this evening. >>thanks for having me Cheryl appreciating. absolutely so we learned today of course that the former officer Derek Chavez was taken into custody charged with third degree murder and manslaughter. Many protesters want to know why it takes so long for police officers to be arrested. Often times a revert back to my time as a lieutenant in the NYPD’s internal affairs bureau investigated his types of instances in the past and one of the things that we have to take in consideration is what for sure someone can be passed in using deadly physical force against people in the street.
