Patch featured the Black Student Union in "Pace U. Holds Memorial, Rally 10 Years After DJ Henry Shot By Cop"

Ten years after Pace University student Danroy Henry was killed by a Pleasantville police officer, the school's Black Student Union will host a social justice rally and memorial service Thursday.

The event, on what would have been Henry's 31st birthday, will include speakers, a time of reflection from Henry's friends and family, and the retirement of the varsity football player's No. 12 jersey. It's part of Social Justice Week at the college's Pleasantville campus.

Henry was shot and killed during a post-Homecoming game celebration in the early morning hours of Oct. 18, 2010. The 20-year-old, who had played earlier, was shot by Pleasantville Officer Aaron Hess, who was off duty and out of his jurisdiction. Hess said he saw a group "acting aggressively" outside a Thornwood bar as he was passing by, called it in, and stayed as Mount Pleasant officers responded.

WAMC featured Social Justice Week in "Pace University Begins Social Justice Week, Honors Slain Student"

A university in New York is honoring the memory of a black student who was fatally shot by a white police officer 10 years ago with its inaugural social justice week. Pace University’s social justice-centered programming is for both its Pleasantville, Westchester County, and New York City campuses. Many of the events are centered on the death of Danroy “DJ” Henry, a Pace University football player from Easton, Massachusetts who was fatally shot October 17, 2010. Henry was unarmed when he was shot by the officer who was not charged in the incident. Following a campus rally on October 29 – the date Henry would have turned 31— Pace will retire his Number 12 jersey. The nearly 50 events that began Monday run through October 30 and are free. Some are open to the public.
