Press Release: Pace University and the United Nations University for Peace Forge New Partnership

Will Build New Programs and Learning Opportunities for Students in Environmental and Human Rights Law

NEW YORK, NY (October 24, 2018) – Pace University and the University for Peace (UPEACE) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work toward building mutual programs and learning opportunities for students of both institutions. Pace University Provost Vanya Quinones, UPEACE Rector Francisco Rojas Aravena, Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Dean Horace Anderson and faculty and staff of the law school attended the signing ceremony, which took place on Pace University’s Manhattan campus.

“Today, every academic discipline depends upon partnerships and knowledge that is shared across geographic and intellectual boundaries,” said Pace University Provost Vanya Quinones.  “At Pace, we are proud of our expertise in international environmental law. We welcome joining our strengths in environmental law with UPEACE’s advanced expertise in human rights law and other areas. We look forward to building our faculty and student associations with Costa Rica to create greater opportunities for our students.”

Rector Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena added, “Education enables development of institutions that rule of law needs for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.”

Today’s agreement is the first step toward collaborations between Pace and UPEACE. The partnership will result in additional learning opportunities for students from both institutions including possibilities for new dual degree programs, opportunities for UPEACE students to study in New York and Pace students to study in Costa Rica, new and innovative courses that draw on the strengths of both schools and additional avenues to publish research through Pace’s scholarly journals.

Pace Law’s nationally recognized environmental law program is ranked fourth in the country by “US News &World Report.”  The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University launched its environmental law program in 1978; it has long been ranked among the world’s leading university programs. Pace’s doctoral graduates teach environmental law at universities around the world. Pace’s J.D. alumni are prominent in environmental law firms, agencies and non-profit organizations across the U.S. and abroad. Pace’s multiple environmental law programs with Brazil are the most extensive of any U.S. university. Today’s collaboration between Pace and UPEACE builds on this tradition.
