Westchester Lawyer Magazine featured Haub Law Professor Karl Coplan's piece "Biden Administration Can Achieve its Climate Change Goals"

President Biden has announced the most aggressive climate goals of any presidential administration ever. The new identical administration seeks to achieve a zero carbon electricity sector by 2035. While these goals are ambitious, they are in keeping with the reductions contemplated by the 2015 Paris Agreement and the emissions reduction pathways identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as necessary to limit warming to 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial global climate.

Westchester Lawyer featured Haub Law Dean Horace Anderson's piece "Looking Ahead, Once Again"

A year ago, just after I was appointed Dean of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, I shared with you in this space my vision of Haub Law for the next 40 years. I mentioned among other things our proximity to New York, our emphasis on practice-based training and our large offering of clinics and externships, our new Flex J.D. program, our revamped Advanced Certificate of Health Law and policy, and our highly ranked Environmental Law program.

And then 2020 happened, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the killing of George Floyd, and the highly contentious national election. While we have pursued the above-mentioned priorities, new ones emerges as the year progressed.

With the worldwide pandemic raging in March, Pace University officials announced the transition of instruction to remote learning for all three Pace University campuses, first to the end of the month, then through the end of the school year and summer.

Westchester County was home to the original hot spot of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States; so, it is entirely fitting that the county’s only law school, Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University (Haub Law), has responded by ramping up our programs in the fight against the virus.

Careers related to the health care and bio-tech industries, particularly near the Law School’s campus in Westchester, are on the rise. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in healthcare occupations in expected to grow 15% from 2019 to 2029 which is much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million jobs.

Is it too late to turn climate change around? And what would it take?

The climate scientist tells us it is not too late, but that time is running out because the climate crisis consequences are occurring more quickly than anticipated, and the major world polluters are not stepping up to the plate.

So what is to be done?

Clearly, the world has to transition from dependence on fossil fuels, which constitute some 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, to more benign fuels. There is no shortage of economic efficiency and renewable energy alternatives.

Horace E. Anderson Jr. “At Pace we have always trained lawyers to meet the challenges of the world that they are entering professionally.
