Provost’s Open Educational Resource Grants
August 2019 - December 2019. Pace University, Pace University, $1,000.00. Funded.

2016-2017 Innovation in Teaching Grants
January 2017 - May 2017. ITS-Academic Technology (ITS-AT)., Pace University, $1,750.00. Funded. Physician Assistant (PA) students must acquire and integrate extensive medical knowledge rapidly and effectively during abbreviated didactic and clinical phases of training. The average length of PA programs is currently 26.4 months with roughly 12-13 months didactic and 12-13 months of clinical training. By contrast medical school training consists of four years of preclinical and clinical parts, and completion of additional training is required before practicing as a physician. The ability to acquire and apply vast amounts of knowledge in a short time frame is essential for the physician assistant student. Although classic lecture style teaching is standard for most PA programs concept maps may provide an adaptive learning tool for PA students. Concepts maps are visually based active learning tools which allow students to graphically visualize, organize and relate large amounts of learning material. Students can generate 1-2 concept maps based on a complex topic which may be presented in 40-50 or more PowerPoint slides or several pages of reading materials. Concept maps can present general topics or themes which are further classified, distinguished and organized into smaller topics; the process of creating maps allows students to review and organize large amounts of information with visual representations which help demonstrate relationships and can facilitate critical thinking. For example the general topic of antifungal medications can be “mapped” and classified and sub classified into types of drugs by class, mechanism of drug activity, major adverse effects and indications/ contraindications. (See attached example) There is a growing body of evidence which illustrates and supports the effectiveness of concept mapping as a learning and assessment tool in medical education.
