The Pace University School of Education is pleased to announce a new MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International. This 30-credit program is being offered on both our NYC and Pleasantville campuses.

The TESOL International MS prepares teachers of English who want to work in an international setting, or with adult learners in the US. Students learn the theories, strategies, and methods for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), so they can apply the knowledge, sociolinguistic contexts, and language development to instruction. This program gives special emphasis to the teaching of writing and the use of technology for today’s globalized classrooms. Students have a range of fieldwork experiences and hands-on practice teaching under the guidance of supervisors, faculty and mentor-teachers.

“There is a growing trend among international universities, such as Europe and Asia, where English is being used as an instructional language,” said Xiao-lei Wang, Ph.D., Acting Dean of Pace University’s School of Education. “By providing programs that support this need, we are at the forefront of the upward trend.”

This program of study integrates foundational courses in education, TESOL core courses that cover theories, language acquisition and linguistics, TESOL methods, and electives. There are also two ‘capstone’ courses–one, Teacher as Researcher, requires students to learn the fundamentals of research and applications to teaching. The MS in TESOL International has been created so that students can have a practicum experience teaching in New York City or in their country of origin. This practical experience will have a supervisor who will either visit and observe in a NYC classroom or observe video recorded classes conducted abroad. This innovative program has been designed to be completed in one year.

Global Pathways: Academic, Social and English Support for International Students

The TESOL program at the School of Education offers international students the opportunity to be a part of Pace University’s Global Pathways program, offered through the Office of International Students. Global Pathways is an academic bridge program that provides English as Second Language courses, tutoring, and other support through Pace University’s English Language Institute (ELI) and Pace International.

The TESOL Global Pathways program was designed to ensure that international students are able to take credit-bearing courses along with academic English language support as quickly as possible so they are integrated into the School of Education rather than separated.
