Haub Environmental Law Fifty Fund

Advancing Innovation in Environmental Law

Launched in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, the Haub Environmental Law Fifty Fund invests in promising projects and research at a time of significant change in environmental law and policy.

The fund provides flexible grants to help junior environmental law scholars launch or accelerate ambitious projects, develop collaborations, support students, undertake empirical research, create practical tools, engage communities, and advance policy or clinical initiatives.

In addition to receiving funding, awardees will join a supportive community of environmental law scholars and participate in an end-of-grant-year symposium at Haub Law in White Plains, New York.

Grant Details

Program Goals

The Haub Environmental Law Fifty Fund seeks to:

• Provide flexible, timely funding that helps junior scholars advance meaningful work.
• Encourage innovation in environmental law scholarship, education, policy, and practice.
• Foster collaboration, peer feedback, and community-building.
• Support projects with the potential for scholarly and real-world impact.
• Strengthen the environmental law academy by investing in emerging scholars.

Who May Apply

Applicants must be junior law professors with an environmental law focus at a U.S.-based law school.

Eligible applicants include:

• Full-time, pre-tenure faculty.
• Faculty members in their first year following tenure.
• Clinical faculty who meet the career-stage requirements, including those who are not in tenure-track positions.

Collaborative proposals are welcome. At least one member of the project team must meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate significant involvement in the proposed project.

Funding

Awards are expected to range from $2,000 to $8,000 per project. Haub Law anticipates funding multiple projects, although the number and amount of awards will depend on the proposed projects and available funding.

Funding may support project expenses such as:

• Research assistants.
• Data acquisition, software, technical tools, or limited computing services.
• Interviews, transcription, surveys, and other empirical or fieldwork expenses.
• Workshops and stakeholder convenings.
• Practitioner or community engagement.
• Project-related travel, including visits to archives, field sites, interviews, or collaboration meetings.
• Limited conference travel directly connected to advancing or sharing the funded work.

Other reasonable and innovative expenses may also be considered.

Funding may not generally be used for:

• Faculty salary supplementation or course buyouts.
• Indirect costs.
• Unitemized or unjustified expenses.
• Entertainment unrelated to the project.
• Expenses that conflict with institutional policies, applicable laws, or research ethics requirements.

Optional Letters of Support

Applicants may submit up to two letters of support. Letters are encouraged when they help demonstrate project feasibility, institutional support, or access to necessary resources.

Letters may come from a dean or associate dean, faculty mentor, clinic director, or close project collaborator. They should address:

• The applicant’s ability to complete the project.
• The value of the proposed work.
• Relevant institutional support, resources, or permissions.

Letters may be included with the application or emailed separately by the writer before the application deadline.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

• Innovation and added value: How the funding will enable new or innovative work.
• Feasibility: The strength of the project plan, timeline, methods, and budget.
• Impact and community value: The project’s potential to strengthen the environmental law academy or contribute to policy, practice, education, or community engagement.
• Scholarly development: The potential to advance the applicant’s development as a scholar.
• Budget alignment: Whether the requested expenses are reasonable and support the project’s goals.

Key Dates

• Applications open: Immediately.
• Application deadline: November 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
• Review period: November–early December 2026.
• Award notification: December 2026.
• Project period: Approximately 9–12 months following the award.
• Awardee symposium: Fall 2027 for the 2026 award cycle.

Awardee Responsibilities

Recipients will complete an award acceptance form and confirm their project budget, payment arrangements, and project timeline.

During the grant period, awardees will be expected to:

• Submit brief quarterly progress and budget updates.
• Submit a final report describing outcomes, outputs, lessons learned, next steps, and final expenses.
• Acknowledge support from the Haub Environmental Law Fifty Fund and the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in resulting publications and presentations.
• Comply with their home institution’s travel, procurement, and research requirements.

Awardee Symposium

Awardees will participate in an end-of-grant-year symposium at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law in White Plains, New York. The symposium will provide an opportunity to present works in progress or project outcomes, receive feedback, and build connections with other environmental law scholars.

Haub Law will cover reasonable symposium participation expenses. Awardees will also provide a brief biography and project abstract for the symposium materials.
