Saving Mount Busa
A Transnational Collaboration By Haub Law With Grassroots Filipino Environmentalists
This short (50 minute) Program describes how Haub Law School’s expertise in protecting wild areas, like the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserve, guided a decade-long campaign to protect Mt Busa in the south of the Philippines, with its rare ecosystems and microclimates at different elevations, home also to indigenous and traditional communities of people. A “good story” for Earth Day.
Tony Oposa and others will describe the 10,000 foot tall Mt Busa, and its pristine ecosystems and the threats from natural resource speculators, unlawful drug trafficking, and weak environmental agencies. Citizens have been winning protection from the grassroots to the Manila, the capital, to Haub Law and other international actors.
Carol Peralto and others will describe how the campaign to save Mt Busa began at Pace and the stages it went through. Now Philippine House Bill 5063, “Mount Busa Protected Landscape,” recently passed the House Committee on Natural Resources hearing.
Nicholas Robinson will moderate, and share how others can replicate this sort of collaboration as an essential and practical contribution to biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
