Carmen Maria Rey Caldas

Biography

Carmen Maria Rey Caldas is an Adjunct Professor and a Supervising Attorney in the Immigration Justice Clinic of John Jay Legal Services, Inc. Carmen is an experienced immigration attorney and immigrant rights advocate. She recently served as an Immigration Judge with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) at the Stewart and 26 Federal Plaza Immigration Courts. Before joining EOIR, Carmen was Assistant Professor of Clinical Law and Co-Director of the Safe Harbor Immigration Clinic at Brooklyn Law School.

In addition to her academic work, Carmen was the U.S. Legal Director at the International Refugee Assistance Project, which provides legal advocacy for refugees and displaced people around the world who are in need of a safe place to call home and Legal Director of Sanctuary for Families’ immigration unit. At Sanctuary, Carmen led efforts to defend immigrant survivors of gender-based violence before federal immigration agencies and federal courts. A graduate of New York University and Brooklyn Law School, she has authored several articles and reports on humanitarian immigration and the erosion of due process protections in U.S. Immigration courts.
