Fill The Earth and Subdue It

As American birth rates continue to decline, a pronatalist movement has gained prominence advocating for policy changes to increase American fertility. Drawing on data from numerous national surveys and interviews with experts and pronatalist activists, Dr. Perry argues that American pronatalism has been and remains deeply rooted in religious logics and indeed cannot be fully understood without religion at the center. Specifically, he demonstrates how religious tribalism has and continues to shape pronatalism's racist foundations, its illiberal normative goals, its guaranteed substantive failure, and ultimately its regressive social and political consequences.

Samuel L. Perry is the Sam K. Viersen Presidential Professor of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Perry studies how demographic transitions and political realignments are shaping American religion, race relations, politics, and family life. He is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, including studies forthcoming in Criminology, Social Forces, and Social Problems. Dr. Perry is also the author or co-author of five books. This year, he is a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City where he is working on two books. His first represents the subject of his forthcoming talk on religion and American pronatalism and is under contract with Princeton University Press. The second is called Ruling Class Religion and will examine the connections between Christian nationalism, class, and economic inequality.
