Remembering Richard L. Ottinger: His Life, His Legacy, and the Future of Energy and Environmental Leadership

Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Dean Emeritus Richard Ottinger

This special tribute honors the extraordinary life, career, and enduring legacy of Dean Emeritus Richard L. Ottinger (1929-2026): environmental pioneer, dedicated public servant, leading scholar, and beloved teacher whose influence shaped the Law School and helped define modern environmental law. The tribute is a fitting way to kick off a year celebrating the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University’s 50th Anniversary.

Through two panel discussions, distinguished colleagues, former students, and scholars will reflect on Dean Ottinger's remarkable contributions to public service, legal education, environmental law, and energy policy. The first panel will explore his personal and professional journey, examining the values, vision, and leadership that helped shape both the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University and the broader environmental movement.

The second panel will look forward, considering the continuing relevance of Ottinger's work in addressing today’s energy and climate challenges. Drawing inspiration from his most recent scholarship, collaborations and advocacy, including his work with faculty and students, panelists will discuss the future of renewable energy, international climate governance, and the role of law in advancing a more sustainable world.

This program offers an opportunity not only to celebrate a transformative figure in the history of Haub Law at Pace, and environmental law more broadly, but also to examine how his ideas continue to influence the next generation of leaders, advocates, and policymakers. Please join us!

A reception will follow.
