Add Opportunities And Experiences

As an English major, you’ll join a rich and vibrant community of writers, scholars, and activists. Together with faculty, you might attend plays and performances, learn from visiting luminary writers and poets such as Wayne Koestenbaum, Rumaan Alam, and Patricia Spears Jones, present your creative work at open-mic nights, or help edit and publish our longstanding literary journal, Aphros. You might go on field trips with faculty to archives like the Interference Archive—a trove of materials related to social and political activism—or learn how to write and publish your own ‘zine or graphic novel. Or you might work closely with faculty as a part of the university’s Undergraduate Research Programs on topics as diverse as “The Origins of Black Theatre in Downtown NYC” or “Linguistic Features in Contemporary Women’s Language.” Every spring, the department awards up to $15,000 to the best student writing produced by our majors and minors in multiple genres. And, our courses are all capped at 15, 20, or 25 students, so you get a real chance to know one another and your faculty. We look forward to having you join our community!
