Graphic Novel and The Comic Arts in NYC

Create Your Own Graphic Novel at Pace This Summer

In this exciting class, students will be introduced to a professional career in illustration and the comic arts through the graphic novel. During the 2-weeks, students will develop characters, create worlds, develop a story, and print a short comic. Students will learn different styles of drawing and illustration while practicing elements of graphic design exercising an economy of line and form to tell a story. They will learn to use visual methods of expression to translate traditional literary ideas, such as allusions and metaphor to effectively communicate richer narratives in combining images with text.

Students will also study popular graphic novel works, iconic comic characters and storylines, manga, comic strips, and learn their importance as a visual medium in literacy. They will learn to analyze the comic page and implement studies in composition, design, character design, and narrative.

Lastly, Students will also tour comic book and comic art collector shops and meet professional comic creators.

At the end of the program, the students will have a completed short graphic novel and families are invited to a final showcase where students will display their completed work.
