  • Taylor Swift, those cringey Blake Lively texts and the lesson we all can learn
    USA Today
Melvin Williams, a professor of communication and media studies at Pace University, says the spiteful nature of Swift and Lively's texts doesn't reflect well on either woman − and both have probably lost some fans as a result. "A core appeal of Taylor Swift’s brand is her parasocial relationship with fans," he says. "Thus, for fans to read text messages of Taylor Swift engaging in deceptive behavior directly contrasts with their image of her, resurrects past questions about Swift’s authenticity and behind-the-scenes behaviors, and raises questions concerning the singer’s complicity in the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni debacle."

Can ICE agents be prosecuted for shootings? What to know
    Newsweek
In a Newsweek article examining whether ICE agents can face prosecution for fatal use-of-force incidents, Pace Haub Law Professor Bennett L. Gershman provides expert legal analysis on federal authority, immunity, and constitutional limits on law enforcement power. “The agents could face murder charges in a state court,” said Professor Gershman. “Police officers charged with crimes or civil rights violations never enjoy absolute immunity. They typically receive a qualified immunity, assuming they acted reasonably.”

South Korea's 'fake news' law tests press autonomy
    Deutsche Welle World
Seong Jae Min, a professor of communication and media studies at Pace University in New York, says the government of South Korea has acted because the harm caused by digital disinformation is both too severe and too fast-moving for the existing legal frameworks. "False information and online hate can spread to millions of people within minutes, often causing irreversible damage before any legal remedy is possible," he told DW. Previous laws were designed for legacy media outlets, but "are difficult to apply to today's digital environment, where some of the most influential 'news' actors are YouTubers, influencers and online platforms," he said. And he is optimistic that the revised legislation will have a positive impact.

Op-Ed | The murder of Alex Pretti and the government’s response
    amNewYork
In a compelling amNewYork opinion piece, Pace University Law Professor Bennett L. Gershman dissects the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis, arguing the use of deadly force in this and a prior killing lacked legal justification. Professor Gershman uses eyewitness accounts and video evidence to challenge official government narratives and critically assess federal responses that seek to defend the agents’ actions. His op-ed goes beyond the incident itself, urging readers to consider how government rhetoric and accountability mechanisms shape public trust in the rule of law—especially when constitutional protections are at stake.

    A Diminished Constitution
    Law.com
In “A Diminished Constitution,” published in the New York Law Journal, Pace Law Professor Bennett Gershman and co-author Theodore A. Keyes examine growing threats to foundational constitutional principles in the United States. The article argues that aggressive political rhetoric and actions — especially surrounding events like January 6th — have eroded respect for democratic norms and weakened the public’s confidence in the Constitution as a guardian of liberties and the rule of law. Professor Gershman’s analysis invites readers to consider not just the legal questions of the moment, but the long-term health of our constitutional democracy.

Legal experts give answer to one of the most asked questions about ICE right now
    Tyla
In the wake of two fatal shootings by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this month, legal questions about accountability have surged. Tyla’s analysis explores whether ICE and Border Patrol agents can face criminal prosecution for deadly use of force—a topic that raises complex issues of federal immunity, state versus federal jurisdiction, and qualified immunity for law enforcement officers. Pace University Law faculty, including experts like Professor Bennett Gershman, provide context on how constitutional protections, prosecutorial standards, and longstanding legal doctrines shape the pathways for accountability—whether through state criminal charges, federal civil rights prosecutions, or civil claims. Their insights help clarify what legal hurdles exist when trying to hold federal agents accountable under state or federal law.

It’s Time to Safeguard Genomic Data
    Petrie-Flom Center
In a recent essay published by Harvard Law School’s Bill of Health, Pace Haub Law Professor Lauren Breslow and co-author Vanessa Smith call for stronger ethical and legal safeguards to protect genomic data from misuse, particularly when children and vulnerable communities contribute DNA for research purposes. The authors highlight recent reporting that pediatric DNA data shared for adolescent brain development research was later exploited to support racist “race science” claims, underscoring how systems built for public-health advancement can be co-opted for harmful and stigmatizing ends. Drawing on the Belmont Report’s core principles of respect, beneficence, and justice — as well as past research transgressions like the Havasupai Tribe case — they argue that genomic research must be governed with heightened oversight and an assumption that bad actors will seek to exploit shared data repositories. “Precisely because so much genetic data is now collected, stored, and shared, the Times account raises the specter of a broader ethical vulnerability in genomic science: data systems built for beneficial research can be exploited for purposes to which volunteers who contributed their DNA did not agree,” write Breslow and Smith.

Commentary: In Trump's 'no tax on tips' plan, what about OnlyFans?
    Times Union
In her recent op-ed published in the Albany Times Union, Pace Haub Law Professor Bridget J. Crawford examines a new federal tax rule that would allow tipped workers to claim a deduction—unless their tips come from what the Treasury Department defines as “pornographic activity.” Professor Crawford argues that this exclusion is not a question of morality, but of labor and tax fairness, warning that it disproportionately harms the modern digital workforce, especially women who earn income through subscription-based platforms. She notes that creators on sites like OnlyFans and Fansly are already taxed as independent contractors and receive 1099s like other freelancers, raising a critical question: why should one group of tipped workers be denied a benefit available to everyone else? “Tax policy should meet women where they actually work, not exclude them from deductions,” writes Professor Crawford. “The IRS’s job is to review income, not to judge women’s bodies or the way they earn a living. Women working in digital creator spaces deserve the same neutrality, fairness and access to deductions that the tax code offers other workers.”

What is the difference between the mayor’s corporation counsel and chief counsel?
    amNewYork
The job is to be “the lawyer for the mayor, not the lawyer for the city,” said Professor Bennett Gershman, an expert in prosecutorial and legal ethics at Pace University. Unlike the Law Department, which is more “in the trenches” with litigation and contracts, the chief counsel’s office often plays the role of a confidential adviser to the mayor. As a client, the mayor has attorney-client privilege, so this person is someone “who the mayor trusts.” “Issues involving the police department, issues involving ice, issues involving sanctuary issues involving, the roundup of immigrants — the mayor will be advised by his lawyer,” Gershman said.

    Taipei Times
In History as a compass for national resilience, Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, a professor of history at Pace University in New York, reflects on how lessons from the past can guide nations through today’s geopolitical uncertainty. Drawing on historical patterns of civic resistance and the aftermath of Hong Kong’s 2019 protests, Lee argues that Taiwan’s long-term resilience depends on strengthening democratic institutions, legal safeguards, global partnerships, and youth engagement. He underscores that history is not merely retrospective — it is an essential tool for shaping a more secure and democratic future.

    Sierra Club
The Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic is featured in a recent Sierra Magazine article examining the successful effort to protect the 1011 2nd Avenue Forest, one of the last remaining waterfront forests in Troy, New York. In the case, the Clinic provided pro bono representation challenging the City of Troy’s environmental review and rezoning decisions, arguing that the City improperly issued a negative declaration under New York’s State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and failed to adequately assess potential environmental and cultural impacts of the proposed development. As Managing Attorney Todd Ommen notes in the piece, the case reflected the Clinic’s core mission: representing environmental groups in matters where legal advocacy can play a critical role in protecting the natural environment.

Commentary: To Make Energy More Affordable, Double Down On Renewables
    Times Union
In his op-ed, “To Make Energy More Affordable, Double Down on Renewables,” published in the Times Union, Michael Hamersky, Executive Director of the Pace Energy and Climate Center, challenges the narrative that clean energy policies are responsible for rising energy costs. Drawing on decades of empirical data, Hamersky argues that renewable energy sources including wind, solar, and geothermal, offer long-term price stability and lower system-wide costs than continued reliance on fossil fuels. “The fossil fuel status quo created our current energy affordability crisis. If we continue to commit to that approach by subsidizing old power plants or building new pipelines, we will lock in a long-term obstacle to lower energy prices,” he writes.

What Zohran Mamdani's hold on young NYC voters means for 2026 races
    Lohud
Laura Tamman, a political science professor who teaches at Pace University's Manhattan campus, could see firsthand before the election how Mamdani was motivating young people, just from the number of students in her class who were volunteering for his campaign. Mobilizing people from a generation that tends to distrust government is a tough job, but especially so for city-level elections, Tamman said. Mamdani broke through that barrier by delivering concrete proposals that were easy to understand and put into pithy phrases, like freeze the rent or free buses.

    amNewYork
In his latest op-ed “Donald Trump’s uglification of America,” legal scholar Bennett L. Gershman argues that what we’re witnessing is more than mere political theatrics. Rather, he writes, the former president’s grandiose monuments, hateful rhetoric and aggressive erosion of democratic norms represent a broader moral and structural decay threatening the ethos of the United States.

    THE CITY — NYC News

As chair of the subcommittee that developed the proposal, Professor Mushlin has helped lead the effort to ensure that judges better understand the realities of incarceration and the consequences of their decisions from the bench. If adopted, the rule would make New York the first state in the nation to mandate such visits.

Pace Student Water Walk Dramatized the Plight of the World’s Water-Deprived

More than 100 Pace University students staged a one-mile walk carrying water-filled buckets on their heads to bring attention to people in the developing world who must walk miles to carry water home for their families. The event was held on the Pleasantville campus in support of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Six — "Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.” It was organized by the Gale Epstein Center, and the Millennium Fellows of Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems

“Clean drinking water is a fundamental human right,” said Noor Ul Huda, a Pace computer science major. “It is well-known that water scarcity is having a devastating impact on communities in places like Pakistan, my home country, where mothers and children are laboring for miles every day just so their families have something to drink.”

Silas Gonzalez, Pleasantville campus director of the Millennium Fellows, also a computer science major, said, “Our arms ached during the Water Walk, but that was a miniscule slice of the daily lives of those who risk health and safety in the search for water.”

Lizi Imedashvili, project manager for Seidenberg’s Gale Epstein Center and an event organizer, praised the student walkers, “Some students insisted on traveling the campus circuit twice, to get closer to the experience of those who are forced into this inhumane practice every day. The Water Walk was a reminder to us all that even in the 21st century there are places on the planet where universal rights still remain a personal privilege.”
