Submitting an Application to the IACUC

If you are a researcher at Pace who wants to use animals, this page will provide you with the information you need.

  1. You must have a consultation with Pace University’s Attending Veterinarian, Dr. Rebecca Tierce (contact information below).
  2. You must take the appropriate training courses at CITI. Check the box for Animal Care and Use and then check the appropriate boxes on the next page. Plan to take at minimum the “Working with the IACUC” course and the course specific to the animal you will be using.
  3. Put together your animal use protocol using this template: Pace IACUC application (DOCX).
  4. Follow the Protocol Submission Process outlined below:

IACUC Protocol Submission Deadlines and Review Process

Full Committee Review (FCR)

Protocols requiring Full Committee Review are discussed at convened IACUC meetings held twice per year—in June and December. To be considered at these meetings, please submit your complete application by the following deadlines:

  • June meeting: Submit by May 15
  • December meeting: Submit by November 15

Submissions received after these deadlines may be deferred to the next scheduled meeting or considered for Designated Member Review, if eligible.

Designated Member Review (DMR)

Protocols submitted outside of the full committee review cycle may be eligible for Designated Member Review, a process that allows for a more flexible review timeline.

  • Once a protocol is submitted, it is circulated to all IACUC members for a 7-day review period.
  • During this time, any member may request a full committee review instead.
  • If no such request is made, the protocol is then assigned to one or more designated reviewers for evaluation and comments.

The DMR process generally results in a quicker turnaround for eligible protocols, while still ensuring thorough and compliant review.
