Supervised Experiential Learning (SEL) Rotations

Supervised experiential learning rotations are an essential part of the MS in Nutrition and Dietetics program, providing students with hands-on, real-world experience in various areas of nutrition and dietetics practice. These rotations allow students to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings while developing essential skills in food service management, clinical nutrition, and community outreach. Throughout each rotation, students will meet weekly with faculty in seminars to receive guidance, support, and opportunities for reflection, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching experience.

Supervised experiential learning experiences are divided into four rotation categories:

  • Gain hands-on experience managing food service operations in diverse settings. Placement sites range from farm-to-table restaurants and health focused vegan cafes to K-12 and university level school food programs and healthcare food service operations. No matter where your rotation is, you'll develop key skills in food production, menu planning, budgeting, and nutrition management.

  • Focus on public health nutrition and community-based initiatives aimed at improving access to healthy food. Work with organizations like Federally Qualified Health Centers, teaching kitchens, food assistance programs, and community nutrition programs, helping to design and implement nutrition education and wellness outreach.

  • Train alongside healthcare teams in regional academic hospital systems, community hospitals, long-term care facilities, and children’s hospitals, providing comprehensive nutrition care for patients of all ages with diverse medical conditions. Practice interprofessional collaboration, conduct nutrition assessments, evaluate lab results, and provide nutrition education to patients and their caregivers, while making evidence-based nutrition recommendations to support recovery and improve health outcomes.

  • Explore a specialized area of interest in nutrition. Choose from a wide variety of sites such as complementary and integrative nutrition practices, eating disorder centers, sports nutrition facilities, and private practices in numerous other specialty areas, to tailor your experience to your career goals.
