Business and Professional English: Negotiation Skills

** Course offered Online in Fall 2020 **

All communication above the friendship level is considered professional. This course will help you strengthen your negotiation skills for purposes that range from buying a new car to selling your startup company. You will learn the basics of business development and create your own fictitious company. This interactive course will provide you with the tips to improve your negotiation and basic business skills and the forum to practice them.

In this course, you will:

  • Think critically in a variety of professional and business-related negotiation situations
  • Develop business and negotiation-specific vocabulary and language strategy skills
  • Produce and present information effectively in professional-style communications
  • Produce possible solutions to professional and business-related problems
  • Convey basic facts and answer questions about a negotiating position
  • Communicate agreement or disagreement in group discussions and meetings
  • Explain and justify a specific point or position in negotiation
  • Utilize positive and effective body language

Earn 18 hours for 6-week course

Dates: Fall II (October 17 - November 21, 2020)
Placement Test: None. Please note this course is suitable for Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate level students.
Hours/ week: 3 hours total: 1.5 hours online with instructor + 1.5 self-paced study
Days: Saturdays
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Business and Professional English I

The instructor will guide students through a hands-on experience in leadership, creating their own American-style résumé and cover letter, participating in mock job interviews, an introduction to negotiation skills, and creating an effective professional social media profile. The course will be open to intermediate level English speakers and above.

In this course, you will:

  • Read and critically assess business-oriented texts
  • Think critically in a variety of business and professional-related situations and scenarios
  • Develop business and professional vocabulary and language strategy skills
  • Produce an American-style cover letter and resume
  • Create an effective professional social media profile
  • Produce and present information effectively in professional-style communications
  • Effectively ask and respond to interview or work-related questions
