Weekday Morning Intensive English Courses for Au Pairs (Westchester and Online))

Pace University’s English Language Institute offers au pairs the opportunity to study in our weekday morning Intensive Program at a deeply discounted rate. A limited number of seats are available. Some restrictions apply. Seats will be made available to au pair students following the placement of full-rate paying students. Those seats will be available on a first come, first served basis. Classes are 4 and 5 hours/ week and each session is 7 weeks (Spring and Fall) or 6 weeks (Summer).

Course Descriptions, Dates and Prices

ELI Westchester in White Plains offers Intermediate-Upper Intermediate level courses. Classes are 6 hours/ week and each session is 7 weeks (Spring and Fall) or 6 weeks (Summer).

Conversation And Listening

Improve conversational fluency and listening comprehension. This class focuses on communicating ideas in English. Audio, video and reading materials are used for conversation topics and for developing listening skills.

Earn 35 hours for 7-week course (Fall I, II, Spring I, II) | 30 hours for 6-week course (Summer 2021)

Dates:Fall I (August 24-October 12, 2020) and Fall II (October 13-December 4, 2020)
Placement Test: Online
Hours/ week: 5 (2.5 with teacher and 2.5 self-paced)
Days: Classes with teacher* are Wednesday. Students will work independently with instructor support an additional 2.5 hours per week.
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Grammar And Writing

Learn grammar in the context of your own writing and through controlled exercises from the textbook. Learn how to correct your mistakes and improve your writing by editing and revising your papers.

Earn 35 hours for 7-week course (Fall I, II, Spring I, II) | 30 hours for 6-week course (Summer 2021)

Dates: Fall I (August 24-October 12, 2020) and Fall II (October 13-December 4, 2020)

Reading And Vocabulary

Learn different reading strategies and skills to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. Read a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, novels and stories, and academic texts to learn how to apply these strategies and skills.

Social English

Develop the informal language and stylistic features needed for social interaction with their classmates and for a deeper understanding of their professors. The course focuses on interactions and language that is found in university lectures, materials and classroom/campus situations. Special emphasis is on learning the key differences in formal versus informal language use, vocabulary (idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, slang) and how language is used to express sarcasm and humor in American culture.

Earn 28 hours for 7-week course (Fall I and II)

Registration

All registration and payment for courses is done online.

Au Pairs and other Community Rate students may join Weekday Intensive English courses at a special rate by joining our Waitlist and finishing an online English placement exam. Our Admissions Team will begin contacting students 2-weeks before the session begins to confirm if space is available at the community rate. Students will have 48-hours to finish payment and confirm their registration at the special rate. Spaces are released first-come, first-served, to students who have finished both the Waitlist form and English placement exam. We encourage students to submit their Waitlist Form and English placement exam as early as possible as space is limited.


Location

Westchester campus classes may be held at the Pace University Law School campus in White Plains, New York, or the Pace University Pleasantville campus in Pleasantville, New York. Students in need of transportation between the campuses may use the Pace University shuttle service to travel between White Plains and Pleasantville. The exact campus location will be posted on the website once available. The location will also be sent in pre-arrival information the Wednesday before classes begin.


Parking

Parking permits are required to park on-campus. Registered students will receive a parking permit by email that is valid for the duration of their classes the week before classes begin. Please be sure to print your parking permit and keep it visible on your dashboard while parking on-campus. Please view the parking map (PDF) and park in the designated student areas to avoid a ticket. Do not park in any Staff or Faculty parking areas.


Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After finishing classes, au pair students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended.


Payment and Tuition Cancellation Policy

Notification of your intent to cancel or withdraw from a course must be submitted by email to the ELI. Depending on the course, you may also be required to submit a "Registration Action Form" to the Office of Student Assistance. If the correct procedure is not followed, you will not receive a refund and you will receive an F for the course at the end of the term.

ID Policies

6/7-week Program Students who register by the registration deadline will receive a Pace University ID card at Orientation. Students who register after the registration deadline will be able to create a Pace University ID card at the ID Office. Instructions will be given by ELI Admissions.


Course Completion Policy

Students who have earned a final grade of 60% or higher are considered to have successfully completed a course. Students who successfully complete any course at the English Language Institute are eligible to receive certification for the hours attended. Please read the certificate policy below for certificate eligibility.


Certificate of Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After successfully completing a class (see above course completion policy), students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended. Students who receive a final grade below 60% in any course are considered to have failed the course and are not be eligible for a certificate and will forfeit any hours attended. Certificate will be sent by email within 2 business days of course completion.


Withdrawal Policy

Students who stop attending a class in progress may officially withdraw by sending a message to the English Language Institute eli@pace.edu within 48 hours of the last attended class. Students in good academic standing (class average of 60% or higher) who officially withdraw may receive a certificate confirming actual hours attended. Students who are not in good academic standing at the time of withdrawal or who do not officially withdraw within 48 hours of the last attended class will forfeit any hours attended. An official withdrawal will result in a grade of “W” on University records and academic transcripts. Please see the tuition cancellation policy for refund eligibility.
