Distinguished Professor of Economics Joseph C. Morreale, PhD, was a professor of economics and public administration at the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences and an academic administrator at Pace University for 34 years, until his retirement in December 2023. He received an MA and PhD in Economics from the University at Buffalo, SUNY, and an MS in Higher Education Administration and Finance from the University at Albany, SUNY. As an inspiring and student-centered educator, Dr. Morreale developed and successfully taught several innovative courses, such as Behavioral Economics, The Rise and Fall of World Empires, US-China Economic and Political Relations, Health Care Economics, and a highly impactful Senior Capstone Research course, Eco 400. For his many contributions to Pace University, Professor Morreale has been given several prestigious awards, including Distinguished Professor of Economics, a Society of Fellows Honoree, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.

Professor Morreale was a transformative Chair of the Economics Department for eight years (2014-2022), creating an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and fostering a culture of research among all economics students. This helped the Pace University Federal Reserve Challenge Team and the Fiscal Challenge Team to be very successful in the national competitions. He also created and directed a new and expanding economics graduate program in Applied Quantitative Economic Analysis and Policy. He was a prominent and engaged member of the Society of Fellows for many years, sponsoring numerous students’ research and involving students and faculty in Society events. Many of his students found rewarding and lucrative careers in the private, non-profit, and public sectors. Others, inspired by their research experiences, continued their scholarly inquiry at prestigious graduate programs.

The Joseph Morreale Economics Department Program Fund was established in honor of Professor Morreale’s contributions to the Economics Department, Pace University, and a wider scholarly community. The fund’s purpose is to help the Economics Department to continue developing exciting and rewarding opportunities for economics students, including their engagement in research activities, competitions, and conferences. This fund will generate funds for programs in our Economics Department in perpetuity, helping guarantee long-term support for various programs and initiatives of the Economics Department.
