This institute emphasizes the mind-body-spirit and culture connection and the impact of stress on the mental, physical, spiritual health of individuals; communities studied in the lab encompass ethnic groups including Indian, Chinese, and Latinas as they acculturate to the United States.

Multicultural and gender perspectives’ research activities include the review of literature on gender and to increase the participants’ awareness of the impact of gender on the psychosocial experience of men and women, the psychosocial experience of gays, lesbians and bisexuals and the impact of racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, classism, homophobia, stereotyping and discrimination on the psychological development and functioning of people.

Current PCI research activities include an examination of how parents differ in their views of the parent role characteristics of bonding, discipline, education, general welfare and protection, responsivity, and sensitivity (as well as negativity) in child rearing in comparison to mental health professionals.
